Varsity Golf Wins Best of the West Event

Posted on: September 21, 2021

The Lancer Golf team took to the links on Sunday afternoon to play in the annual Best of the West golf tournament at Miami Whitewater golf course. This late season events brings together the best teams on the west side of Cincinnati to determine who has the best shot to advance in the upcoming Sectional Tournament in two weeks.

Our Lancer golfers, who went out in the first wave of players, got off to a good start with Senior Nate Birck leading the way. Having won this event in 2019, Birck always seems to be atop the leaderboard whenever he tees it up for this event. With an opening birdie on the first hole he set the tone for the rest of his team to follow in search of the tournament title. After a bogey on the sixth and a birdie on the ninth Birck made the turn at 1 under par.

The Lancer team score after nine holes was 155, giving them the early lead, but they knew that their play needed to improve to be contenders for the win. Junior Gabe Logan shook off some early front nine struggles with a hot start on the inward nine holes finding himself 1 under after three holes. After a bogey on the fourteenth hole he played even par for the rest of the round closing with a score of 75.

Birck, playing in the second group out, started the back nine with 2 pars and a birdie to get to 2 under for the day and take the overall lead. But a frustrating bogey on the par 3 thirteenth was followed by three straight birdies on holes 15 thru 17. Needing to make a 15 footer on the last hole for par, he calmly sank the putt to shoot a 4 under par round of 67.

With three players still on the golf course, Seniors Aleks Essen and Evan Isenogle along with Junior Andrew “Bobby” Bobowski, the team needed two more solid scores to contend for the title. With Essen adding a solid back nine score of 39 the team’s attention turned to Bobowski to close out the victory. Having missed some days due to sickness “Bobby” played the final 2 holes even par to allow the Lancers to shoot a season low score of 299.

Once the last teams had finished play the Lancers found themselves atop the leaderboard securing a 3 shot win over the Elder Panthers. This victory is their first overall team win in the past 7 years. Birck once again was the event Medalist with a 4 shot victory over Elders Victor Caliguri.
